DESCRIPTION:NOV 25\, 2023 at The Annex; Performance at 7:30pm. \nIn tribute to this year’s festival theme\, Future Mythologies is a celebratory showcase for the new works in development that aspire to redefine the future of storytelling\, and become the myths of tomorrow. Through performance excerpts and facilitated discussions between artists and audiences\, this event unveils the captivating evolution of three groundbreaking new works: “Eurydice Fragments\,” “CHINATOWN\,” and “Inferno”. \nEurydice Fragments: re:Naissance Opera’s AUREA award winning team gathers once more to fuse opera\, dance\, extended reality\, and emerging technology in this contemporary version of the Orphean myth. Through an immersive exploration of our digital and carbon existences\, the performance dissolves the binaries we are bound to from birth until death\, and strums the threads between heaven and hell\, male and female\, maker and muse\, performer and audience. \nInferno: After the first workshop presentation at IndieFest 2022\, Inferno returns to blend hip-hop\, rap\, beat boxing\, sampling\, R&B\, and contemporary opera in celebration of IBPOC voices. Inspired by Dante’s Inferno\, this feminist\, anti-establishment\, and anti-colonial allegory pairs opera’s emotional richness with hip-hop’s text driven\, poetic aesthetics\, this musical fusion will culminate in an illustration of paradise for IBPOC people and communities. \nCHINATOWN: Chinatown is a new opera in development by Madeleine Thien (librettist)\, Alice Ping Yee Ho (composer)\, Paul Yee (Translator / librettist) and Marjorie Chan (Dramaturg). The opera\, set in Vancouver’s Chinatown\, follows the story of two men and the legacies they strive to create for their families in the midst of the Chinese Immigration Act and anti-asian racism. In this presentation\, the creative team will share insight into their collaborative process and share text excerpts from their newly created second act to this much-anticipated opera. \n  \nTickets

DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, July 27\, 2023 | 8:00 p.m.\nSFU Goldcorp Centre for the Arts \nSingle Tickets \n\nA seamless blend of Baroque and contemporary song and dance\, this interdisciplinary performance is a powerful reclamation of the story of Dido\, The Queen of Carthage\, and her legacy as a political leader\, an empire builder and a woman of colour. This operatic performance\, created by re:Naissance Opera\, features commissioned works by contemporary composers Jessica McMann\, Robyn Jacob and Afarin Mansouri\, along with those of Baroque composers Henry Purcell and John Dowland. This project places Dido through a prism\, in which her story as a multifaceted leader\, lover and outcast are shown in their fullness. \n“Creating ‘The Queen of Carthage’ has been a journey of rediscovering Dido\, not as the tragic figure she has so often been depicted as in Western European Art\, but as a powerful leader who shaped Western Civilizations and history. We forget that before Rome\, there was Carthage and our performance asks the audience to consider: what might our world look like today if our Western European histories started with an empire founded by a woman of colour? SUMMARY:Double Happiness: A Little Detour
DESCRIPTION:Based on the live performance piece Double Happiness: Detour This Way\, this short film traces the migration paths of two families from Southern China through Hong Kong to finally settle in the Pacific Northwest. Featuring 13 original songs by co-leading artists Nancy Tam (A Wake of Vultures) and Robyn Jacob (Only A Visitor)\, they weave through history with an art-pop aesthetic. With its premiere at the Chinatown Storytelling Centre\, Double Happiness: A Little Detour retells personal and communal stories of migration from the Chinese diaspora in a contemporary context. Following the screening will be a panel featuring the creative team about the film’s creative process and the significance to Vancouver’s Chinatown. \nTickets

Audiences will experience innovative motion capture technology coupled with tried-and-true video game tools\, to bring visually and musically dramatic avatars into their world. Bringing together professionals from the opera\, theatre\, dance\, hip-hop\, and video game industry\, this cross-sector collaboration results in a genre-defying work that redefines opera for the modern age. \nSuitable for all ages\, this experience can be enjoyed by folklore and fantasy lovers\, opera goers and gamers\, and beyond! \nINFERNO\nInferno is a new hip-hop opera in development by IndieFest 2022 resident artist\, Omari Newton and Amy Lee Lavoie. The workshop blends hip-hop\, rap\, beat boxing\, sampling\, R&B\, and contemporary opera in celebration of BIPOC voices. The story reimagines ‘Dante’s Inferno’ as a feminist\, anti-establishment\, anti-collonial allegory\, with the story’s framed layers of Hell representing oppressive systems of power. By analyzing the presence of Paradiso on this historical work\, and by pairing opera’s high stakes and emotional richness with hip-hop’s text driven\, poetic aesthetics\, this musical fusion will ultimately culminate in an illustration of paradise for BIPOC people and communities. \nThis is an accessible performance space. \nTickets\n

SUMMARY:Caustic Effect - ASL Opera Workshop Performances
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE PROJECT \nCaustic Effect is a new work-in-progress by Monique Holt (Librettist & Director) and Landon Krentz (Artistic Director & Performer) that explores how language is seen\, heard and understood by combining the movement\, rhythmic structure\, and meter present in both Visual Gestural Communication (VGC) and music. This project is a unique collaboration between Deaf and hearing artists and combines VGC and music binding the story’s themes to our creative process. \nPerformance Dates:\nFriday\, Sept 16 2022 at 7:00pm MDT\nSaturday\, Sept 17 2022 at 7:00pm MDT \nNORDIC BRIDGES COLLABORATION \nThe Nordic community recognizes their countries’ sign languages as a basic human right by law – a stark difference to the realities in Canada. Nordic Deaf artists have the right to sign language interpreters that are completely funded and provided by their governments without any undue financial hardships. They have full access to professional theatre\, acquire artistic training and are able to contribute to the cultural landscape of their countries. The fight for everyone’s right to express themselves in theatre has been the inspiration of Deaf theatre such as Riksteaterns Crea (Sweden)\, Teater Manu (Norway) and Teatteri Totti (Finland). \nAs part of the development process and collaboration with Nordic Bridges – a national arts and culture festival in Canada in 2022 –  this project partners with Riksteatern Crea to bring mentorship and instruction to our creative team providing much needed theatre training access to Deaf artists in Canada. In addition to this mentorship\, Riksteatern Crea will also send Swedish theatre artists\, Jamila and Amina Ouahid to join the core-creative team for Caustic Effect. \nLearn More

SUMMARY:River Island
DESCRIPTION:RIVER ISLAND (literal translation of “Kawashima”) is an in-development devised operatic piece that draws inspiration from the enigmatic life of Kawashima Yoshiko. Born a Manchu royal\, raised in Japan\, and endowed with the destiny of reestablishing the Qing Dynasty\, Yoshiko was known for their multiple personas and various portraits: the Manchu Princess\, the Japanese Spy\, the Military Leader\, the Chinese Traitor. They also used their multifaceted identity to their advantage in their military and spy career during WWII to express their cultural and gender fluidity throughout their life (identifying as both Chinese and Japanese\, man and woman).Through the intersectional lens of Yoshiko’s lived experience\, this operatic piece will examine themes of gender\, sexuality\, queerness\, culture (Chinese and Japanese)\, racialization\, and the erasure of those identities because of Western imperialism. \nProject Container: Set in fictional 1930s Shanghai during the violence of war and revolution\, the various memories and echoes of Yoshiko will once again inhabit the ruins of the historic Majestic Hotel. Using the dance hall as a backdrop and as a container of music and dance that were prevalent in this era (opera\, shidaiqu\, American jazz fusion) we will explore the struggles amongst the many identities of Yoshiko and how their multiple personas of Yoshiko were able to coexist. \nTickets\n  \n\nTeam\nRae Takei\nTeiya Kasahara 笠原 貞野 \n
