Willilish’d explores themes of memory\, emotion\, change\, and motherhood through lullabies and nursery rhymes sung to Hayley by her mother. through a re-composed narrative soundscape. The title of the piece\, Willilish’d\, comes from a nursery rhyme that Hayley’s mother\, Glad\, was taught by her sisters\, who made it up. Through creative design\, quad sound\, and archival elements\, what was two-dimensional and in the past becomes four-dimensional and present. As part of this opening gathering\, we’ll be showcasing three bite-sized performances from artists taking part in our new initiative\, the Convergence Cohort: Kristina Lao\, Alyssa Samson\, and Van Le Fan. The goal of the evening is to connect artists and community members from across disciplines\, facilitating community connection and collision of art forms. \nContinuing our collaboration with DigiBC\, we will be activating select SIGNALS exhibitions during IndieFest 2025\, and will be available to explore during the Opening Gathering. These include Tyler Soon’s 120\,000 LED light sculpture\, Voxelite\, a larger-than-life work connected to the musical game RIFT\, where buttons\, music\, and movement are catalysts for corresponding light patterns and innovative storytelling. We also invite you to interact with Imagining Good Futures: Thunderbird Dreams\, a mural that depicts stories from multiple generations of Indigenous artists. Inspired by Dante’s Inferno\, this feminist\, anti-establishment\, and anti-colonial allegory pairs opera’s emotional richness with hip-hop’s text driven\, poetic aesthetics\, this musical fusion will culminate in an illustration of paradise for IBPOC people and communities. \nCHINATOWN: Chinatown is a new opera in development by Madeleine Thien (librettist)\, Alice Ping Yee Ho (composer)\, Paul Yee (Translator / librettist) and Marjorie Chan (Dramaturg). The opera\, set in Vancouver’s Chinatown\, follows the story of two men and the legacies they strive to create for their families in the midst of the Chinese Immigration Act and anti-asian racism. This operatic performance\, created by re:Naissance Opera\, features commissioned works by contemporary composers Jessica McMann\, Robyn Jacob and Afarin Mansouri\, along with those of Baroque composers Henry Purcell and John Dowland. SUMMARY:Double Happiness: A Little Detour
DESCRIPTION:Based on the live performance piece Double Happiness: Detour This Way\, this short film traces the migration paths of two families from Southern China through Hong Kong to finally settle in the Pacific Northwest. Featuring 13 original songs by co-leading artists Nancy Tam (A Wake of Vultures) and Robyn Jacob (Only A Visitor)\, they weave through history with an art-pop aesthetic. With its premiere at the Chinatown Storytelling Centre\, Double Happiness: A Little Detour retells personal and communal stories of migration from the Chinese diaspora in a contemporary context. Following the screening will be a panel featuring the creative team about the film’s creative process and the significance to Vancouver’s Chinatown. \nTickets

Helming the performance is one of Canada’s leading performers of new works\, M3F co-founder and mezzo-soprano Kristin Hoff. The production\, which features stage direction by Jennifer Szeto\, premiered in 2022 at the Watershed Festival in Kingston and was subsequently described by the Kingston Theatre Alliance as the “modern opera the world needs” \n“This production will serve as my debut as a stage director. What more can I say? It’s delightful to explore storytelling from this creative angle (which in opera is so deeply intertwined with and inseparable from the music itself\, so much so it seems absurd that stage and music direction are considered different “entities”).
