Presented by artist and musician Ruby Singh\, with key collaborators Tarun Nayar (Modern Biology)\, Fiana Kawane (Kathak)\, and Priyanka Chakrabati (PIU)\, Laine Butler\, Michelle La (Ephemeral Objects) the work explores how data sonifications\,visualizations and field recordings can raise ecological awareness. \nFuture Renaissance:\nCreated by Voirelia Dance Hub; Artistic Director/Choreographer: Alina Sotskova\n \nSet 500 years from now\, Future Renaissance is a fusion of virtuosic contemporary dance\, sci-fi\, and Renaissance art. SUMMARY:NOV 15-17 | Eurydice Fragments
DESCRIPTION:IndieFest 2024 presents the World Premiere of Eurydice Fragments. Join us for an immersive live theatre experience at Signals Studio\, at the Centre for Digital Media.\n\nTickets: Regular: $25–45 \nFour Performance Dates:\nFri\, November 15th | 7:30pm\nSat\, November 16th | 2:00pm\nSat\, November 16th | 7:30pm\nSun\, November 17th | 2:00pm\n \nGET TICKETS\n— \nEurydice Fragments is a contemporary version of the Orphean Greek myth that fuses powerful vocal performance\, dance\, extended reality\, motion capture and interactive technologies. Through an immersive exploration of our digital and carbon existences\, the performance dissolves the binaries we are bound to from birth until death\, and strums the threads between heaven and hell\, male and female\, maker and muse\, performer and audience. \nThe story follows O\, a trans person whose sense of gender and identity is expansive — yet who has lived a fractured life. Haunted by past experiences and personhoods that have been suppressed\, repressed\, or condemned\, O journeys to the Styx\, a queerbar\, where they find the opportunity to express themself through avatars in extended reality. As O navigates the fluid landscapes of identity and technology\, Eurydice Fragments challenges us to question: how do we navigate the vastness of our identities in spaces that resist our multiplicity? \nContent note for representations of intersex/trans/nonbinary-erasure\, in the form of oppressive language and systemic prejudice: these are things our production attempts to disrupt. Specific scenes draw on oppressive language around prenatal identification of intersex genetics\, and on legal language enforcing limitations on gender fluidity. \n— \nLearn More about Eurydice Fragments\n—\n\nPerformers: \nTeiya Kasahara as O\nBrandon Thornhill as Hope\nToddy as Plusephone\nLeo D.E Johnson as Charon\nSara Vickruck\, Chorus\nAlyssa Samson\, Chorus\nAsitha Tennekoon\, Chorus\nScribbly Doodle\, Beatboxer\nJen Lewin\, Co-Music Director & Keyboardist\nPerri Lo\, Co-Music Director & Keyboardist\nAlex Chen\, Co-Music Director & Keyboardist \napprox runtime: 90 mins \nIf you need accessible seating\, please indicate via the checkbox in checkout or contact marketing@reopera.com.\nIf you are Indigenous\, Inuit\, or Métis: Contact marketing@reopera.com for access to free tickets. \nGetting There\nSignals Studio at CDM is accessible by public transportation. SUMMARY:NOV 25 | Future Mythologies
DESCRIPTION:NOV 25\, 2023 at The Annex; Performance at 7:30pm. \nIn tribute to this year’s festival theme\, Future Mythologies is a celebratory showcase for the new works in development that aspire to redefine the future of storytelling\, and become the myths of tomorrow. Through performance excerpts and facilitated discussions between artists and audiences\, this event unveils the captivating evolution of three groundbreaking new works: “Eurydice Fragments\,” “CHINATOWN\,” and “Inferno”. \nEurydice Fragments: re:Naissance Opera’s AUREA award winning team gathers once more to fuse opera\, dance\, extended reality\, and emerging technology in this contemporary version of the Orphean myth. Through an immersive exploration of our digital and carbon existences\, the performance dissolves the binaries we are bound to from birth until death\, and strums the threads between heaven and hell\, male and female\, maker and muse\, performer and audience. \nInferno: After the first workshop presentation at IndieFest 2022\, Inferno returns to blend hip-hop\, rap\, beat boxing\, sampling\, R&B\, and contemporary opera in celebration of IBPOC voices. Inspired by Dante’s Inferno\, this feminist\, anti-establishment\, and anti-colonial allegory pairs opera’s emotional richness with hip-hop’s text driven\, poetic aesthetics\, this musical fusion will culminate in an illustration of paradise for IBPOC people and communities. \nCHINATOWN: Chinatown is a new opera in development by Madeleine Thien (librettist)\, Alice Ping Yee Ho (composer)\, Paul Yee (Translator / librettist) and Marjorie Chan (Dramaturg). The opera\, set in Vancouver’s Chinatown\, follows the story of two men and the legacies they strive to create for their families in the midst of the Chinese Immigration Act and anti-asian racism. In this presentation\, the creative team will share insight into their collaborative process and share text excerpts from their newly created second act to this much-anticipated opera. \n  \nTickets

SUMMARY:The Queen of Carthage – World Premiere
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, July 27\, 2023 | 8:00 p.m.\nSFU Goldcorp Centre for the Arts \nSingle Tickets \n\nA seamless blend of Baroque and contemporary song and dance\, this interdisciplinary performance is a powerful reclamation of the story of Dido\, The Queen of Carthage\, and her legacy as a political leader\, an empire builder and a woman of colour. This operatic performance\, created by re:Naissance Opera\, features commissioned works by contemporary composers Jessica McMann\, Robyn Jacob and Afarin Mansouri\, along with those of Baroque composers Henry Purcell and John Dowland. This project places Dido through a prism\, in which her story as a multifaceted leader\, lover and outcast are shown in their fullness. \n“Creating ‘The Queen of Carthage’ has been a journey of rediscovering Dido\, not as the tragic figure she has so often been depicted as in Western European Art\, but as a powerful leader who shaped Western Civilizations and history. We forget that before Rome\, there was Carthage and our performance asks the audience to consider: what might our world look like today if our Western European histories started with an empire founded by a woman of colour? What’s really exciting about this project is the amazing creative team we have assembled and the new commissions from Afarin Mansouri\, Robyn Jacobs\, and Jessica McMann. The contemporary music reminds us of the importance of engaging in a constant dialogue with our past and the impact of erasing people\, like Dido\, from our histories. We are thrilled to finally give her the platform she deserves and to present her as the multi-faceted and influential woman she truly was.”  – Dr. Debi Wong\, founding artistic director\, re:Naissance Opera. \nArtists: Charlotte Siegel\, soprano; Marisa Gold\, choreographer and dancer; Dr Debi Wong & Stephanie Wong\, stage directors; Catalina Vicens\, music director/2023 Artist-in-Residence; and EMV Festival Players directed by Catalina Vicens: Chloe Meyers\, violin 1; Majka Demcak\, violin 2; Nolwenn Le Guern\, viola da gamba; Margaret Little\, viola da gamba; Natalie Mackie\, violone; Erin Headley\, lirone; Antione Mallette-Chénier\, triple harp; Lucas Harris\, theorbo. \nVanka Salim\, lights/design lights/design; Roberta Doylend\, costumes \nGenerously sponsored by A Cappella Foundation (artist sponsor – Charlotte Seigel)\, Jens & Linda Lee Henriksen\, Joanie and Samantha Anderson\, Mike & Kathy Gallagher\, Anonymous\, & Vincent and Zelie Tan \nCo-produced by:  Early Music Vancouver and re:Naissance Opera; Co-Presented with SFU Woodward’s Cultural Programs

SUMMARY:Imaginarium Concert IV - Curated by Rich Coburn
DESCRIPTION:A musical sampling platter of vocal chamber music by nine exciting BIPOC (Black\, Indigenous\, or People of Colour) composers. BIPOC Voices Director Rich Coburn has curated a dynamic program of works from the BIPOC Voices database. And each has a body of work in the BIPOC Voices database. If something speaks to you\, they have operas and works on every scale for you to discover there! \nThe Imaginarium’s Creative Series addresses curatorial practices at the festival\, and brings in four new IBPOC festival curators to curate one performance project each. These conversations will culminate in a series of community events that will take shape as either an in-person performance\, a generative workshop\, or a community panel. \nLearn More\n  \nTickets

SUMMARY:Musique 3 Femmes: SOLO
DESCRIPTION:Presented at the Fox Cabaret\, Musique 3 Femme’s SOLO is a tour-de-force double bill for solo unaccompanied voice\, featuring Scottish composer Judith Weir’s King Harald’s Saga and Love Songs by JUNO-Award winning composer Ana Sokolović. Helming the performance is one of Canada’s leading performers of new works\, M3F co-founder and mezzo-soprano Kristin Hoff. The production\, which features stage direction by Jennifer Szeto\, premiered in 2022 at the Watershed Festival in Kingston and was subsequently described by the Kingston Theatre Alliance as the “modern opera the world needs” \n“This production will serve as my debut as a stage director. What more can I say? It’s delightful to explore storytelling from this creative angle (which in opera is so deeply intertwined with and inseparable from the music itself\, so much so it seems absurd that stage and music direction are considered different “entities”). This experience is made even more special by the chance to collaborate in a new way with my colleague Kristin Hoff\, who is a wondrously talented and generous collaborator” – Jennifer Szeto \n  \nTickets

DESCRIPTION:TOUR: By activating the festival venues\, dance performers act as tour guides that lead audiences through space\, making short stops on the way to share their “instantaneous expertise” on the history of objects\, their surroundings\, as well as their own bodies and personal histories. How do the institutions we inhabit every day impose their realities and histories upon us? How might we gesture towards other ways of inhabiting them? \nTOUR (NOV 20) is an intimate event with two show times: 7:00pm & 8:30pm. DESCRIPTION:Hosted by re:Naissance Opera and the Sun Yat Sen Classical Chinese Gardens\, Imaginarium I: The Liminal is an evening of music and art that will invoke transformations\, be it personal\, relational\, cultural\, or communal. This event is a dedicated space for change; it exists between the past we are shifting away from\, and the futures we are dreaming up. In a curated evening of nostalgic foods\, reflective musings\, and explorative art forms\, The Liminal holds space for the familiar and the unknown. Join us on November 18th\, where we will honor the discomfort of transition\, while celebrating this present moment of introspection\, connection\, and dreaming. \nThe Imaginarium’s Creative Series addresses curatorial practices at IndieFest\, and brings in four new BIPOC festival curators to curate one performance project each. These conversations will culminate in a series of community events that will take shape as either an in-person performance\, a generative workshop\, or a community panel. \nLearn More\n  \nTickets\n\nCurator\nStephanie Wong

SUMMARY:Inferno & Live from the Underworld II: Eurydice's Calling (Double Bill)
DESCRIPTION:Nov 16 Double Bill \n\nLIVE FROM THE UNDERWORLD II: EURYDICE’S CALLING\nAfter its online success\, Live From The Underworld II: Eurydice’s Calling comes to The Annex Theatre for its first in-person presentation! Audiences will experience innovative motion capture technology coupled with tried-and-true video game tools\, to bring visually and musically dramatic avatars into their world. Bringing together professionals from the opera\, theatre\, dance\, hip-hop\, and video game industry\, this cross-sector collaboration results in a genre-defying work that redefines opera for the modern age. \nSuitable for all ages\, this experience can be enjoyed by folklore and fantasy lovers\, opera goers and gamers\, and beyond! \nINFERNO\nInferno is a new hip-hop opera in development by IndieFest 2022 resident artist\, Omari Newton and Amy Lee Lavoie. The workshop blends hip-hop\, rap\, beat boxing\, sampling\, R&B\, and contemporary opera in celebration of BIPOC voices. The story reimagines ‘Dante’s Inferno’ as a feminist\, anti-establishment\, anti-collonial allegory\, with the story’s framed layers of Hell representing oppressive systems of power. By analyzing the presence of Paradiso on this historical work\, and by pairing opera’s high stakes and emotional richness with hip-hop’s text driven\, poetic aesthetics\, this musical fusion will ultimately culminate in an illustration of paradise for BIPOC people and communities. \nThis is an accessible performance space. \nTickets\n

SUMMARY:Caustic Effect - ASL Opera Workshop Performances
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE PROJECT \nCaustic Effect is a new work-in-progress by Monique Holt (Librettist & Director) and Landon Krentz (Artistic Director & Performer) that explores how language is seen\, heard and understood by combining the movement\, rhythmic structure\, and meter present in both Visual Gestural Communication (VGC) and music. This project is a unique collaboration between Deaf and hearing artists and combines VGC and music binding the story’s themes to our creative process. \nPerformance Dates:\nFriday\, Sept 16 2022 at 7:00pm MDT\nSaturday\, Sept 17 2022 at 7:00pm MDT \nNORDIC BRIDGES COLLABORATION \nThe Nordic community recognizes their countries’ sign languages as a basic human right by law – a stark difference to the realities in Canada. Nordic Deaf artists have the right to sign language interpreters that are completely funded and provided by their governments without any undue financial hardships. They have full access to professional theatre\, acquire artistic training and are able to contribute to the cultural landscape of their countries. The fight for everyone’s right to express themselves in theatre has been the inspiration of Deaf theatre such as Riksteaterns Crea (Sweden)\, Teater Manu (Norway) and Teatteri Totti (Finland). \nAs part of the development process and collaboration with Nordic Bridges – a national arts and culture festival in Canada in 2022 –  this project partners with Riksteatern Crea to bring mentorship and instruction to our creative team providing much needed theatre training access to Deaf artists in Canada. In addition to this mentorship\, Riksteatern Crea will also send Swedish theatre artists\, Jamila and Amina Ouahid to join the core-creative team for Caustic Effect. \nLearn More
