ABOUT 168
What are your visions for the future of Chinatown?
‘168’ is a new youth-led magazine that brings together local youth, artists, elders, and diverse community members to share their creative visions and aspirations for the future. Spearheaded by Blake Abbie, an acclaimed Chinese-Scottish Canadian artist and editor based in Vancouver and New York Chinatowns, and led by an editorial team
of talented high school students from across the lower Mainland, ‘168’ empowers youth-driven storytelling and community engagement. Co-facilitated and published by the Chinatown Storytelling Centre and re:Naissance Opera, this unique publication marks 100 years since the passage of the Chinese Immigration Act by inviting contributors to imagine the century to come. It will feature art, photography, “Letters to the Future,” and reflections on Chinatown’s intersectional identities and iconic spaces.

Why “168”? It is a lucky number in Chinese that sounds just like the phrase “one path to prosperity” (一路發) and it’s also the address for the Chinatown Storytelling Centre where the magazine was produced, on 168 E. Pender Street!
